Firework Advice
Some rabbits, particularly those which live outdoors, can be frightened by the unexpected bangs and flashes from fireworks. These are a few precautions that could help your pet during this season, and also at New Year.
If possible move an outdoor cage into an unheated room, like a garage for the evening. (If the car is in the garage be aware that exhaust fumes can be dangerous to pets.) Leaving lights on and a radio playing in the garage can be helpful. If this is not possible, it is recommended that the front of the cage be covered with a heavy fabric like carpet or tarpaulin to reduce the flashes. Provide plenty of hay or straw which the rabbit can burrow into. Maybe the cage could be turned to face the wall or even the patio doors, with the rabbit looking into the house.
If the rabbit lives in a shed it may be possible to leave lights and a radio on here until after the fireworks have ended. Also covering the windows to block out the flashes as the fireworks explode can be helpful. Getting the bunny accustomed to the sound of a radio playing before a firework event may help reduce the stress of these new sounds.
If the fireworks are close or deafening, do spend time with your pet to soothe and reassure him. Possibly bringing bunny indoors with you, maybe in a pet carrier fitted out with bedding and food, can be an option for the night. If you do this, do be aware of the differences in temperature between a warm home and the outdoors as this can be difficult for a bunny to handle. Again an unheated area like the garage may be the ideal place.
Be aware also of the potential fire risk with the hay and shavings in the hutch...
